Q&A with Newt Gingrich on his book: "Real Change: From the World that Fails to the World that Works"

March 14, 2008, 12:31 pm Newt Gingrich Answers Your Questions By STEPHEN J. DUBNER Photo: Callista Gingrich, Gingrich Productions Last week, we solicited your questions for Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House whose latest book is Real Change: From the World That Fails to the World That Works. His answers, below, are comprehensive, measured, and often fascinating. I think this is easily one of the best Q&As weve had on this blog. Note: if you are a hardcore liberal Democrat, try t

Radical indeterminacy, lots of bullets and several gallons of blood

I read No Country for Old Men late last year, as part of a spurt of fairly frantic Cormac McCarthy reading that began earlier in the year, with reading The Road. Shortly after, I re-read it, as I was both captivated and mystified by it. At Faith in Honest Doubt, Dale makes a series of extremely perceptive comments about the book. I haven't yet seen the film: I'm waiting for the DVD to come out in Germany to watch it in English -- dialogue being important in both Coen films and McCarthy books.

When Mike was still getting up a whole lot later than I was, we put a little travel clock in the bathroom so that I wouldn??t have to open the door and disturb him with bright blinding bathroom light to know what time it was in the mornings. Now that he and I get up at essentially the same time, the clock is somewhat less important. Which explains, somewhat, why I didn??t reset it after the time change in November. Now, suddenly, the clock is right again. It sure used to seem longer between the t

No Meaning for Old Men

Okay, watched No Country for Old Men last night. Um . . . yeah. It was good. Well put together. I was pretty underwhelmed after the build up. No idea how it got so many nominations. Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin were very good, but I don't really see how any reasonably good actor couldn't have done with Javier Bardem did. I kinda didn't get it. It had the "Oh well" ending of Fargo but without Marge Gunderson's simple, moral voice asking the "Why?" question. It wasn't better than Int

In 1971 there was an event called "Winter Soldier.'' It was Vietnam vets gathering together to tell the truth about that war. They testified about the war crimes - the burning of villages, free fire zones, forced relocation of villagers, mistreatment of civilians, electrical torture, mutilation of bodies - that were de facto policy of our military. It was an extraordinary attempt to speak truth to power. That power, of course, did not want to hear, and those voices were only minimally heard and

Simple questions - Fiction

Simple questions - Fiction I began this miserable existence in darkness, and to darkness I shall again return. Before I go, my heart asks ???Was it worth it???? My soul answers from the Grey that precedes the darkness ???Oh yes. Yes it was.??? As the Grey surrounds and invites me into the darkness, the smile appears for a moment on my lips, and then it is gone. She closed the book. A country for great movies

If you??re looking for two great movies, you need to see No Country for Old Men and In the Valley of Elah. Both star Tommy Lee Jones, both had plenty of Academy Award nominations and No Country took away 4 Oscars, including Best Picture. I read Cormac McCarthy??s book, No Country for Old Men last year it was great to see him sitting front and center at the Awards. I??m a McCarthy fan and it was a riveting, spare, tough gritty story. "Blessed Be"--God the Father part 2

Yesterday we looked at God the Father as our Father. We saw how He provides for us, He leads us and guides us. And when we need it, He disciplines us. But He doesn??t take joy in disciplining us. He does it so that He can guide us back to paths of holiness, so that we can share in the righteousness of Christ. Today, we??re going to look at God the Father as our Judge. Not just our judge, but the Judge of every single person who has ever been born, or ever will be born. Here??s a statistic for you:

The Other Boleyn Girl, I loved this movie. I know the reviews weren't so great but still, I really enjoyed it all....the costumes, the scenery, the handsome king and of course one of my favorite actresses, Scarlett Johansson.
